This handy apparatus that uses a thermistor system more accurate than a conventional thermometer — and it doesn’t require a water-filled cylinder. Wind the nylon band several times around the aluminum cylinder and hang a large weight (can of sand) on one end. Crank the cylinder to raise the weight, creating frictional heat by slippage of the cord. Now you can calculate the work done and read the temperature change to find the heat produced. A calibration chart is printed on the unit to convert thermistor voltage to temperature. The apparatus also comes with nylon rope, a can for holding mass and a tube of dry graphite to prepare the calorimeter surface and comprehensive instructions. Requires a voltmeter, to read the thermistor voltage and connecting cords. The apparatus is 14cm long and 11cm wide, with a 5cm deep clamp to grip the lab bench; the calorimeter is a cylinder 5cm in diameter and 5.5cm long. Features include rugged ball-bearing construction and heavy machined components; an industrial grade revolution counter which can be re-zeroed between experiments; a built-in friction pad; and guides for the friction rope to make the initial set-up easier.
