A heat pump is a device that uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Heat pumps pull heat out of the air or ground to heat a building, or they can be switched into reverse to cool a building. Unique in that they can serve the functions of both a furnace and an air conditioner, heat pumps work extremely efficiently, because they simply transfer heat, rather than burn fuel to create it.
Pressures and temperatures in the circulation of the heat electrical compression heat pump are measured as a function of time when it is operated as a water-water heat pump. The energy taken up and released is calculated from the heating and cooling of the two water baths. When it is operated as an air-water heat pump, the coefficient of performance at different vapor temperatures is determined.
Use this experimental setup to:
1. Create a water -water heat pump: measure pressure and temperature in the circuit and in both water reservoirs (condenser and vaporization sides) in an alternate fashion; calculate energy input, output and efficiency; determine volume concentration in the circuit and the volumetric efficiency of the compressor.
2. Create an air-water heat pump: measure air vapor temperature and water condenser temperature under different operating conditions on the air vapor side; with stream of cold air, with stream of hot air and in non-blowing ambient conditions.
If a power meter is available, the electric power consumed by the compressor can be determined and the energy efficiencies of the pumps may be calculated.
Materials included are work and power meter; glass rod sand beaker, support system, stopwatch, hot/cold air blower, heat conductive paste, thermometers, heat pump compressor, and instructions. An optional power meter is available separately.
For your convenience this experiment is available to you as a complete set.
Everything you require to perform the activities are included in the total price.
