A solar cell consists of three distinct elements. Firstly, a semiconductor is required to absorb light and then convert it into electron-hole pairs. Secondly, a semiconductor junction is present which serves to separate the photo-generated carriers (electrons and holes). Thirdly, the contacts on the front and back of the cell allow the current flow to an external circuit. Two main types of solar cells are applicable depending upon the type of semiconductor used: either crystalline silicon in a wafer form or thin films of other materials.

The current-voltage characteristics of a solar cell may be measured at different light intensities by varying the distance between the light source and the cell. The temperature dependence of no-load voltage and short-circuit current may also be determined.

Use this experimental setup to:
1. Determine the light intensity at various distances from the light source using a thermopile.
2. Measure the short-circuit current and no-load voltage at various distances from the light source.
3. Estimate the temperature dependence of no-load voltage, and short-circuit current.
4. Use data to plot the current-voltage characteristic at different light intensities.
5. Plot the current-voltage characteristic (as shown) under various operating conditions such as cooling or heating the equipment with a blower or shining the light through a glass plate.
6. Determine the characteristic curve of the solar cell when illuminated by sunlight.

Includes connecting cords, a lab thermometer, a digital multimeter, a glass pane, support system, a plate holder, a meter stick, and hot and cold air blower, q filament lamp and ceramic lamp socket, a rheostat, a measuring amplifier, a themopile, four solar cell batteries, and instructions.

For your convenience this experiment is available to you as a complete set.
Everything you require to perform the activities are included in the total price.
For assistance in using your new equipment we also offer professional development (WLS1808-24) on all PHYWE line products.
