Determining the coefficient of expansion of a variety of metals has never been easier. This model uses warm tap water instead of steam for safety. A metal rod is inserted into the jacket, then heated by warm water. As the rod expands, the extent of the expansion is measured to within .01mm by a micrometer. Compare the expanded length of the rod to the temperature difference before and after expansion to yield a coefficient. Binding post connectors let you create an electrical circuit to signal when the expanded rod is touching the micrometer. Set includes apparatus, one each steel, aluminum, brass and copper rods; rubber tubing; single-socket lamp board, two replacement bulbs (6.3V, 150mA); connector cables, and a student thermometer. Dimensions: 70.5cm x 7.5cm x 10.5cm high.
