The diaphragms are made from stainless steel, offering complete opacity. A lateral row of five 2 x 0.2mm precision etched slits 5mm apart is provided as a useful calibration tool. The diaphragms carry slits from 0.12mm to 0.8mm wide in varying arrangements.
