Ripple Tank |
Demonstrate Wave Theory and Mechanics. This integrated system uses a pulsed air supply to create easily reproducible waves. The unit consists of a tank frame with mirror, three-digit display controller, wave generator, stroboscopic light, metal obstacles, and dippers of plane and circular waves. Using it you can study diffraction of plane waves through a slit, dispersion, gravity waves, wave interference, liquid depth and propagation speed, pulses diffraction, reflection, and refraction. Size: 52 x 44 x 40cm; weight: 6.5kg.

 - Friday, May 21, 2010 not that great for the $ Reviewed By: J Larson (Albuquerque, NM)
Wave propagation is driven by pulses of air from an enclosed speaker. Wave shadows aren't all that sharp. Incandescent light cannot turn off quickly enough for effective strobing. Amplitude adjustment is not useful because the waves are tiny even at full blast. Striations in the plastic tub cast shadows that interfere with the wave shadows.
Unit came with incomplete experiment manual.
Unit had missing parts and additional mystery parts not listed in the assembly manual.
You will likely have just as much success with a pyrex casserole dish and an overhead projector. For consistent wave action, one could rig up a small motor that vibrates one or more point sources or a plane source.
Sorry, it might be worth it at $100, but not $500.
