Tangent Galvanometer


A traditional-style Tangent Galvanometer lets you use a supplied compass and the EarthÍs magnetic field to measure ñunknownî currents from first principles. Two coils of insulated wire, with 5 and 10 turns respectively, are wound on an aluminum ring. The ring is mounted on a plastic base with three binding posts connected so you can use 5, 10 or 15 turns of wire. With the coil oriented parallel to the EarthÍs magnetic field, the compass deflection can be used to calculate the current. Includes compass, instructions and experiments. Requires ñunknownî DC current source. Size of ring: 20cm in dia.
